As pelvic physiotherapists, we get a lot of questions from women who are experiencing symptoms they didn’t even know were related to their pelvic floor. If you’ve ever wondered about certain symptoms, pain, or discomfort, you’re not alone! Let’s dive into some of the most common “Did you know?” questions we hear at our clinic.
Did You Know Pelvic PT Can Help with Tailbone Pain?
Yes! If you’re dealing with tailbone pain (also known as coccydynia), pelvic floor physical therapy can help. The muscles of the pelvic floor attach to your tailbone, and if they’re tight, weak, or uncoordinated, they can cause significant discomfort. Our approach focuses on:
- Restoring mobility to the tailbone
- Reducing muscle tension
- Improving coordination and stability
- Teaching symptom management techniques for daily life
If you find yourself avoiding certain chairs, wincing when sitting or standing, or skipping exercises that involve lying on your back, it’s time to address those symptoms. the pelvic physio in Omaha is here to help you get rid of that pain for good!
Did You Know UTI Symptoms Can Mimic Pelvic Floor Dysfunction?
Do you experience urgency, frequency, burning, or incomplete bladder emptying, but your UTI test comes back negative? It might not be a urinary tract infection at all—it could be pelvic floor dysfunction.
Many women with pelvic floor muscle tension experience these exact symptoms. In fact, chronic UTIs can sometimes be linked to pelvic floor issues as well. The more difficulty you have fully emptying your bladder, the higher the risk of recurrent infections. If you’ve been stuck in a cycle of antibiotic treatments without relief, it might be time to see one of our pelvic physiotherapists to address the root cause.
Did You Know Constipation Can Make It Hard to Empty Your Bladder?
If you struggle to fully empty your bladder, our first question is: How are your bowel movements?
When your bowels are backed up, the pressure can impact bladder function, making it harder to urinate and even leading to leakage. Everything in the pelvic area is connected, and constipation can create a domino effect of issues. Hydration, fiber intake, and pelvic floor muscle coordination all play a role. At the pelvic physio, we help women improve bladder and bowel function through targeted therapy and education.
I’m Having Symptoms—Does That Mean My Pelvic Floor is Weak?
This is one of the most common questions we hear: “I’m leaking, feeling pressure, or experiencing pain—so my pelvic floor must be weak, right?” Not necessarily!
In many cases, the pelvic floor muscles aren’t actually weak, but rather uncoordinated. If these muscles aren’t working in harmony with the rest of your core, it can lead to problems with pressure management, discomfort, and even increased tension (yes, tightness can be just as problematic as weakness!). This is why we don’t recommend Kegels!
If you’re unsure whether your pelvic floor needs strengthening, relaxation, or better coordination, a pelvic floor physical therapist can assess your needs and develop a treatment plan tailored to you.
